On August 28th, Greenlandic reports from the government were expected to provide an initial answer, but diverging conclusions have only intensified the confusion. At the heart of the debate are revelations from two Danish journalists in a podcast broadcast by the public radio-television DR in May 2022. The documentary, ‘The Shotgun Campaign,’ attempts to establish the circumstances surrounding young Inuit women and girls who were given birth control shots by Danish healthcare personnel starting in the 1960s. According to estimates, at least 4070 Greenlandic women were affected, with some as young as 12 or 13. Breaking their silence, some recount the trauma they felt during the insertion of the shot. Many say they did not give their consent. Some experience infections and become sterile. Others suppress the memory, only discovering the presence of the contraceptive years later during a medical examination. Government Greenland is proposing the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission not to assign blame, but to shed light on the truth in a perspective of reconciliation.
